I am honored to join EMH on viola da gamba for this program featuring wonderful “maverick” composers. Event description from website: Musica Reservata describes the avant-garde style of 16th century sacred music which foreshadowed the Enlightenment, characterized by refinement, exclusivity and intense emotional expression. Scott Fikse will conduct a program of works by Orlande de Lassus, Carlo Gesualdo and others who composed in the highly chromatic but expressive style – ahead of their time. Not all innovators applied such occasionally extreme effects but they were equally influential. William Byrd led the development of a new and lasting genre in English music, Claudio Monteverdi that of the new Baroque in Italy. Join the EMH Chamber Ensemble as they explore the creations of these composers and more – some of them “mavericks” – others less so.
Join an all-star cast of Hawai‘i’s instrumental and vocal virtuosi as they reimagine the vibrant string ensemble styles of the Kalākaua era and pay tribute to the musical legacy of legendary Royal Hawaiian Band leader, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, Mekia Kealaka’i. Illuminating the vibrant and cosmopolitan musical community of the 19th century Hawaiian kingdom, this concert traces the life and influence of Mekia Kealaka’i through his own words and compositions, from collaborations with the monarchs of the Kalākaua dynasty to the songs of his great protégé, the immortal Lena Machado.
